To date, there is no effective treatment to stop or cure Alzheimer's disease or other dementias or neurodegenerative diseases.
To investigate its causes and possible treatments, it is not enough to do it in animals or laboratory models. What we know about Alzheimer's today is mainly due to the study of the human beings who have suffered it. And it's been possible because those people have donated brain tissue for research.
The donated brain tissue is removed after the death of the donor. The Pathological Anatomy Service of the University Care Complex of León (CAULE), after obtaining the neurological tissue, will process and study the samples to document the existing pathology and subsequently proceed to its storage and custody for transfer to the Neurological Tissue Bank of the Institute of Neurosciences of Castilla y León (BTN-INCYL).
It is necessary to express our commitment in writing or that of a direct relative when we already we can not do it This commitment is materialized through a simple Donation Document available in our facilities.
At the time of death, it is important that people in the donor's environment communicate it immediately to the Tissue Bank Neurological Institute of Neurosciences of Castilla y León (BTN-INCYL) (24 hours telephone: 669 60 57 23). Serfunle S.A. Servicios Funerarios de León will collaborate in the transfer when the death occurs outside the University Assistance Complex of León (CAULE).
The donated brain tissue will be kept under the custody of the BTN-INCYL and the tissue biobank of CAULE. It can be used in research projects throughout the country and also in foreign research centers that request it. In Spain, brain banks, like other biobanks of biological samples for research, are part of the Plataforma Nacional de Biobancos, a coordination structure of the Carlos III Health Institute.
